I've had a beard since my early teenage years (yep, my beard started growing when I was around 13/14 years old) and it's always been a pain keeping it neat, only because at first it was my mum and now it's my wife who's been complaining.
I think the beard catcher has been around for only a couple of years and originated from the US, not sure if this was the same company but this was a godsend for me. Simply attach the suction tabs (which has hooks) to the mirror or even bathroom tiles, wear the catcher around your neck (velcro) and simply attach it to the hooks. Just be careful with the suction tabs, as they are plastic and pretty sensitive, make sure you don't break it, I felt like I was about to break mine!

This beard apron or beard catch is a very simple idea...in its most basic description, it is a small sheet that catches your beard trimmings. It comes in a small zip up bag which gives it a perfect storage bag to be tucked into a drawer when not in use.
This particular version has hooks that sucker to your mirror and then the other end is worn around your neck like a normal hairdressers/barbers gown.

I prefer to trim rather than have a regular wet shave. This comes at the price of a messy sink, hair over the counter and an annoyed partner.
