Gillette Contour plus blades, still cutting edge!, 8 Oct. 2011

It may be old technology, basic design for cost efficient manufacture Contour Plus was never a particularly sexy or exciting product but they are effective and dead cheap. They still cut a clean swathe through my tough, two days old stubble, they have never cut me presumably by faithfully following my contour, plus they stay sharp for ages. Did I mention they are cheap too? At this price you can bin the blade as soon as it starts sticking, you don't have to make em' last until your facial hair is being dragged out by the roots, just clip in that slim black plastic block of keen new blades and carry on shaving. Possible film title?..

I had a couple of old Contour handles but it was becoming impossible to find the cartridges in the shops. Supermarket shelves are piled high with over-engineered and steeply overpriced razors (£7 for 4 heads??) and the models are so rapidly changed, after a year those pathological hoarders out there will end up with huge collections of outdated...

I was almost put off trying Gillette's Contour Plus razor blades after a bad experience with a disposable razor left me with a fear of `cheaper' cartridges, but on the whole they've been pretty good. They lack the spring-mounted blades you'll find on the Sensor or Mach 3 series, and the five blades and buzzy action thing you'll find on their Fusion Power series, but they do have the swivel head and lube strip that those and other Gillettes have. Some people love the lube strip and others loathe it; personally, I find it difficult to get a comfortable shave without one so it being there is a bonus for me.

However, the blades in the Contours don't seem as sharp as many newer-type cartridges and they don't last anywhere near as long either - like clockwork I get three, maybe four, shaves from each one before my skin tells me that it wants a change. Compare that to the average of seven or eight shaves I get from more premium cartridges and the difference is obvious. They also...

I started using these in the 80s and still have my 2 original handles. Since then I have occasionally tried other razors with 4 blades etc. They often cut me and I can't get a decent shave. I always go back to my contour plus. Te are becoming hard to find and even then, around £9 so £4 delivered is excellent. A pack of 10 will last me around 4 months shaving every other day.
