• What does the power rating of the lamp mean? The power ratings of the lamps can sometimes be confusing as the number scale and meaning is different for UV and LED Lamps. For both LED and UV lamps, the higher the power, the faster the curing. However, for UV Lamps to cure effectively, the lamp must be at least 36W. A 36W UV Lamp will cure most nail gels in 2 minutes. LED Lamps start at 3W and they will cure the same nail gel in only 30 seconds.
• Is there anything else I should consider when choosing my lamp? Size: Size matters! • Why do I need an LED or UV Nail Lamp? Gel Polishes, Gelish and Shellac all require the use of an LED or UV nail lamp to cure (set and dry) the gel. Most gels (including Oulac, Bluesky and CCO) will cure under both UV and LED nail lamps. At each step, every coat of gel will need to be cured under the lamp, once dry a sticky layer is left on the nail which helps with the bonding process. You can check whether the gel is cured by lightly tapping it, when cured the gel will be sticky but not wet. Once the top coat is cured, the sticky layer can be easily removed using a Shine Wipe.
• What is the difference between an LED Lamp and a UV Lamp? LED and UV Lamps both cure nail gels perfectly, however there are a few difference that you should be aware of when making your choice. Curing Speed / Drying Time: LED Lamps are faster to cure than UV Lamps with curing times generally around 30 seconds, UV Lamps require longer curing times around 2 minutes. Health and Safety: UV Lamps do emit UV rays and so skin protection is advised for use. LED Lamps do not emit UV radiation. Product Lifetime: LED lamps last much longer than UV lamps. Most UV lamps have a life of around 1000 hours. While the lamp itself will not die, the bulbs will need to be replaced. This could be an ongoing expense depending on how often you choose to use your lamp. On the other hand, LED nail lamps should last for up to 50,000 hours. Investing in an LED lamp means never having to worry about replacing the bulbs.
