This Essie Base Coat is a fairly thin consistently and it goes on easily. It dries quickly to a semi-matte finish. I debated about applying a second coat but the directions only mentioned one, so I left it at that. Next, I applied two coats of color. Both went on easily with very little streaking on the first coat. Since the base coat dried quickly, it didn't take long for the two coats of color to dry as well. This base seems to have a finish that helps the color layers to adhere and go on easier. I used a different brand of polish for the color and it seemed to react well with the Essie. I wouldn't use just the base coat without color because it doesn't dry as shiny as a polish or top coat. This is as it should be, because the other polish probably wouldn't adhere as well if it were a higher gloss.I don't normally use a base coat, but based on my experience with this one, I will probably start, and will purchase more of this product when this bottle is gone.

I love Essie's base coat. Goes on easy, doesn't smell much and dries quickly. Protected nails from even highly pigmented reds.
