I have been using Pine Tar Soap in general for a while. I thought I'd give this Birch tar soap a go, to see if it was as effective and smelled as nice. Also, the Birch is my favourite tree, so I was interested in using something made from it.
The first thing you notice about this soap is the smell. When it's still wrapped up in its packaging, it's a bit unnerving, as to me it initially had an unpleasant acrid aroma like cigarettes. Still, I'd bought it and it is reputedly good for your skin. I thought I'd at least give it a try. If it was unbearable I'd just use it as an insect repellant when out and about, and go back to the Pine tar... Fortunately, after unwrapping the bar, the smell improved somewhat. More of the wood and tar aroma came through, making it less unpleasant. When showering with this soap, the wood and tar aromas come through even more, so it doesn't make the bathroom smell like an ash tray! I'd have to say that the smell is still an "acquired taste"...
