For short haircuts only, no beard trims!, 25 May 2014

This isn't a multi-functional 'shaver'. It's designed to do Grade 1 to Grade 3 haircuts only, There's no beard trimmer or brow trimmer attachments. It's essentially an electric razor to do an all-over skinhead haircut.

It's perfect as what it is. The handle is well shaped and the wide blades cut quickly and evenly (you can select a hairlength of 1mm to 10mm at 1mm intervals, and the selection clicker is sturdy). The unit charges quickly from a small mains powered cradle (nice that it's small, a lot of these electrics have taken to using HUGE cradles lately) and you get up to 40 minutes cutting time from one charge. The cleaning is a stroke of genius. Instead of having to wipe down the blades or poke around with a small brush, you can simply run water through the unit, flushing out stray trimmings.

On the downside, the comb attachment (to cut at the chosen hair length) is very cheap plastic. I had one on a similar Panasonic trimmer and after a few weeks...

Panasonic Blue/Silver Self Hair Clippers, 17 July 2014

These aren't the first clippers used in this house, so we were hoping for big things as the price is quite steep. The clippers come nicely packaged, and feel fairly sturdy. The enclosed leaflet is great, really informative. Everything looks and feels great....it's just when you come to use them the problems arise. I think these are good if you either have very little or thin hair, or for use on dry hair. Using on wet hair, the cut seemed perfect.....but then once out of the shower and hair dried, there were bits sticking up all over the place! Recutting once dry resulted in a much better finish, and a lot more hair cut off. Also, be aware of how much hair can clog plug holes. What seems like a tiny trim produces quite a lot of hair! In all, these are good clippers, but expensive for what they are.

These were purchased to replace an old philips hair clipper which had served me well for 3 or 4 years.

Pros:

The range of cutting length is brilliant. I wanted a 2mm cut (old philips could only do 3mm as the smallest) and these do everything from 1mm up in STEPS of 1mm. Perfect. (Please people - stop confusing the barbers "blade 1" with 1mm cut, or Blade 2 with 2mm cut - you are wayyyy off*)

Cons:

It feels like it scratches your head a little as you shave IF you try and go to fast or too hard. (Giggity).If you slow down and go gently they are perfect.

Hair doesn't fall off the guides as easy as the last philips, but so what. Turn it over every now and again, give it a slightly stronger tap and move on with your life.

It feels like the battery doesn't last as long as the old philips, but I still get 6 weekly shaves out of it before I recharge. So it's hardly a big deal...
