As with other Phillips hair removal with light technology, this is an effective unit but there are significant restrictions...

There are numerous ways of removing hair - shaving, waxing, epilating etc. - all eventuate with hair regrowth, as I'm sure most of us know. This kind of treatment is totally painless for suitable users, which I think is massively progressive in this kind of treatment. Epilators are effective in that they pull out the entire hair from the root, but even these grow back in six weeks or so, and let's face it, they hurt. This light treatment basically affects the melanin and hair root so that it interrupts growth, and the hair falls out naturally; ie it causes you to moult in treated areas. Do bear in mind that hair will regrow with this treatment, and it requires repeat treatment every two weeks (four weeks for legs) to maintain the hair-free zones. Value option, just as effective, 7 Aug. 2015

The most important thing with any IPL hair removal product is that you read the information really carefully before considering a purchase. Not only is this a pricey item but not all skin types are suitable. For example in my case, after a recent road-traffic accident, I have multiple scars on my legs - all of these must be avoided and therefore this isn't going to be a complete solution for me. Normal skin types are going to be OK, but do check first.

The Lumea is easy to use and this model is different from the other models as it is so much more compact. It must be plugged into the mains to work, there is no battery inside this small unit.

You need to take time to read all the instructions and prepare the skin for treatment (i.e. shave). It is then quite time consuming, but very easy, as you move the head of the device onto each fresh patch of skin and press the button to release a very bright flash of light (which inhibits hair regrowth). Philips Lumea Essential SC1983/00 IPL, 22 July 2015

Already own one of the larger gun type models from Philips which works excellently and has reduced my leg hair by over 50% in the last few months. This model works exactly the same but I can now use on my face (lacking on my other model) and whilst the light pulse it produces is slightly weaker seems to be working the same. The really great advantage to me over the larger model is the size of this machine, smaller and easier to hold if you have dexterity problems. Also being able to alter the strength of the pulse is great as different areas benefit from this and mean virtually painless use. Another great product from Philips hair removal range.
