I'm not exactly sure what purpose they serve, but my mum loves it and that's all that counts. She specifically wanted blue for some reason - perhaps just to be familiar because her last one was blue - I have no idea. Blue she wanted blue she got. She's happy - I'm happy she's happy. It's stretchy but doesn't seem to be made from elastic - weird. I guess it could accommodate small rollers but mum just uses it for sleepingACID TEST: would I buy again/recommend - Yes
