If you're looking for a hair product that actually encourages your hair to look more natural than it is, then you certainly won't go wrong with Schwarzkopf's Beach Matt Surfer Look paste.

Depending on the occasion (or of course mood) I've got a few different products that tackle my thick, straight hair, and this particular offering is a great way to give your locks a more sporty, unkempt look that is ironically achieved by some very special ingredients. Suffice to say, this product actually does make your hair feel as though it's just been towel-dried from a swim in the sea, and I have no idea how that is achieved. I consulted my barber, and apparently salt/sea water is one of the best things to calm straight hair, which probably explains why I look quite different in holiday photographs (tan aside)...

I used to use Tigi Bed Head Wax Stick, quick and easy to get that “out of bed” look. Tired of high price I looked for substitutes I could buy at my supermarket. I narrowed it down to these 3 that I bought to test.

Garnier Fructis Surf Hair Gum 02: quite wet and doesn’t become tacky while you are applying. It’s closer to gel, holds like gel, and not so strong. OK on short hair but just looks wet as hair gets longer.

Schwarzkopf got2b surfer look matt-paste: much thicker than the Fructis and sort of grainy. It becomes tacky as you apply, so goes in like paste as opposed to gel, definitely matt. It doesn’t hold in clumps like gel would, it sort of adds tacky body to your hair, very much like what you get at the beach, hence “surfer look”.

I'm sure the product is aimed at guys, but I use it on my waist-length hair and love it- my hair has a natural curl that can tend towards the fluffy. On wet hair, I use a little argan oil, to nourish, since this product is very sticky, then I work just a little of this matt paste through the lengths of my hair, then just with what's left on my hands after that I very slightly scrunch through the roots- really great for adding texture and getting your hair into "pieces" rather than a big cloud of fluff, without making it look at all greasy or like there's any product in it. Then a quick blow dry and the hair is ready for up-dos- the paste gives the texture and structure of hair the day after washing (much better for putting it up) without the grease. This stuff works way better than expensive "texturising sprays" and generally speaking sprays have more nasty chemicals etc in them than pastes/liquids/etc. using it this way, the little jar will last ages, so it's definitely a win.
