Shea butter is a wonderful product of nature that everyone should know about! It has so many uses - hair, skin, massage, treating mild skin irritations etc.

If you've never experienced shea butter before, it is of a hard and sticky consistency, so you may want to use a knife or other sharp-edged object to break off the amount you require. You can either melt it down to a thin, oily consistency by putting it in the microwave or on a radiator, or you can simply place a little piece in your palm and use your index finger or thumb to rub and apply pressure to melt it down into a pomade-like consistency. I currently use this method to apply the shea butter to my skin in order to reduce the appearance of a few stretch marks. Shea butter is the richest emollient you will ever find that isn't greasy. I massage it onto my legs and arms after a shower or bath and on my hands every night. Bearing in mind that as a busy mum, the wrong side of 40, who also works as a decorator, you may imagine my hands to be wrinkled and dry. Well they were! I couldn't use most hand creams as the fragrance stayed on long after the effects wore off and that's not ideal for anyone who prepares food. Also, I only use natural products that won't contribute to the modern day toxic chemical overload with all the chronic health problems that go with it, so the products available to me were slightly limited. I bought 500g of Organic Shea Butter Unrefined because I wanted to try it before I ordered the 1kg. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of Shea Butter that I received for the price I paid and the quality is fantastic. I use it on my skin and intend to mix it with some oils to make a moisturizing conditioner for my hair as I'm currently on the organic bandwagon. As I have read the butter makes the skin so soft and is even better on the lips. It is easily melted in the hands when rubbed together and is really soft. It comes as solid blocks in the container and a little goes a long way. Very good stuff.
