The reviews are coming in thick and fast for this product. I've seen several go up today alone. So what is it about this balm, is it really all it's cracked up to be?
First of all, who makes it? Steampunk is just a trademark. It's made by a company with a different name in Devon - on the back of the tin you can find out more about them.
In my book this thing has to be able to:
- Smooth down the beard and tame it
- Make it look fuller, or at least darker
- Smell good too: masculine and not sweet
This balm certainly does all three. I would recommend using the back of one's thumbnail to scrape a pea-sized amount out. Now, I've got quite a short beard at this point and I had to use three peas' worth - though I would say that was likely too much and down to my inexperience. In the future I'm sure two would suffice. I have been previously using beard oils, my initial reason was. I have more of a short beard, as if I have it any longer I can feel quite irritated by the texture of my hair (the downside to having overly sensitive skin) and can often develop dry areas or small like pimples hidden in amongst the growth. So not a full grown out beard like most others. This product claimed to soften hairs, the biggest issue I have had.
Now after trying this, I'm converted to using a balm, as the oils I have used previously can make me feel as though I'm running for fitness model of the year with the amount of oil not absorbed into my folicals or skin.
The smell of this balm is literally to die for! (Try to stop smelling the pot.. I dare you) It's infused with a less than subtle dose of Lime & Cedarwood so there's definitely no loss of scent that lasts throughout the day.

I got this as I am growing out a beard for the first time and have found it to be an itchy and flaky experience at times. A friend recommended beard oil which I have been trying with mixed results, I had tried beard butter, balm and oils before, with very mixed results. I thought giving this a try would be worth it.
This comes in an old style shoe polish type container, similar to tiger balm or something but bigger. It smells very natural, the almond/mint? comes through the strongest although it is not overly strongly scented. It looks like a wax, similar to beeswax skin care products. You do only need a small amount of this, as it will melt in your palms and then you apply it, don't apply too much or it will stick in your beard. If you find it hard to melt, warm up your hands first with hot water. I found this a lot easier to melt than some other wax products which seem to want to revert all the time.
