As a sixty-something year male, I have bitten my nails for six decades, ever since I was a toddler. I've tried all kinds of bitter tasting substances. They're fine, provided you remember to apply them every day, and accept (certainly in my case) that it is a preventative, not a cure. Miss one day and I'm biting my nails down to the quick again.

So, coat the nails with an acrylic and I don't bite them.Yes, it's still a preventative, but it usually lasts for a week or more, and only the corners of the nail usually break off - the main part of the nail is still protected. Over many months, I grew my nails from tiny, until they're so long I have to trim them, to stop them being longer than my fingers.
Applying is quite easy. First wash and dry your hands. Then use a nail file to roughen the front of the nail, so the acrylic will stick to it. One at a time, spread a little quick brush-on...
