The national flower of China, the beautiful peony has inspired many an artist in both the eastern and western hemispheres, but it was the artists of China and Japan who become particularly renowned for incorporating images of the peony into the visual arts, poetry and literature.

Peonies are one of the main motifs of Chinese decorative arts and can be found on porcelains, in woodblock and screen paintings, as well as embroidered on to tapestries and clothing. In Chinese medicine, too, the peony has its place; for centuries, dried petals have been brewed into tea to treat coughs and peony seeds have been prescribed to prevent bad dreams. In fact, in the middle ages, it was hard to find an ailment that peonies were not thought to soothe!

As with the living bloom, our Peony is a soft, fresh floral note that's both uplifting and calming and works brilliantly alongside other delicate floral notes.
